Royal jelly capsules: what to check before you buy
We are beekeepers, and we do not sell royal jelly capsules. Here is what the numbers on a capsule label mean, what to look for, and who should skip royal jelly altogether.

NorCal Nectar has never made royal jelly capsules. Our store lists fresh royal jelly, but it is currently unavailable to order: fresh royal jelly spoils at room temperature and needs cold-chain shipping we cannot offer yet. We would rather say so than sell you something that arrives warm.

What is actually in the capsule
Most royal jelly capsules contain freeze-dried powder rather than fresh jelly. That changes how it is stored and what the milligram figure means.

Four things to check on any capsule

Powder or "fresh equivalent"?
A label that says "1000 mg fresh equivalent" may contain only about a third of that as powder. Neither figure is wrong, but you can only compare two products if they use the same one.

Is 10-HDA stated?
10-HDA is a fatty acid found in royal jelly and is the usual marker used to characterise it. A label that states a 10-HDA percentage is telling you more than one that does not.

What else is in the capsule?
Check the "other ingredients" line for the capsule material, fillers and flow agents, especially if you avoid gelatin.

Where is it from, and when does it expire?
Look for a stated country of origin and a best-by date. "Distributed by" tells you who sells it, not where the royal jelly was produced.
Allergy warning: if you are allergic to bee products, do not take royal jelly in any form. Severe reactions, including anaphylaxis, have been reported, particularly in people with asthma. If you are pregnant, breastfeeding or on medication, ask your doctor or pharmacist first.

What does 10-HDA mean on a royal jelly label?
10-HDA (10-hydroxy-2-decenoic acid) is a fatty acid found in royal jelly and is commonly used as a marker to characterise it. Some labels state the 10-HDA percentage; comparing that figure is more informative than comparing milligrams alone.
Who should avoid royal jelly?
Anyone allergic to bee products should avoid it — severe allergic reactions, including anaphylaxis, have been reported, particularly in people with asthma or other allergic conditions. If you are pregnant, breastfeeding or taking medication, ask your doctor or pharmacist before using it.
